This arena is only the second arena I have done in this series that is actually still open as the Nassau Coliseum was the first of the two. The Pond opened in 1993 and was original called the Arrowhead Pond after the company Arrowhead Water bought the naming rights to the arena. Shortly after the arena opened the NHL franchise later known as the Anaheim Ducks were founded and would at the arena. Then in October 2006, Honda paid 60 million dollars for the naming rights to the arena and thereby changed the name of the arena to the Honda Center. However, this post is looking back at the matches from the arenas past before the name change.
Some of wrestling's best matches took place within the hallowed halls of the Pond, like the Hollywood Back lot Brawl between Roddy Piper & Goldust at WrestleMania 12 or the Royal Rumble match from 1999. That's right some great events took place at the arena as well like WrestleMania 12, Royal Rumble 1999, & WrestleMania 2000 (16). The best matches from the Arrowhead ponds history include: Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels in an Ironman Match for the WWF Championship from WrestleMania 12, or the I-Quit Match for the WWF Championship from Royal Rumble 1999 between The Rock & Mankind, who could forget the Triangle Ladder Match between The Dudley Boys, Edge & Christian, and The Hardy Boys from WrestleMania 16.
In many respects the Triangle Ladder match set the stage for the TLC matches that would follow at Summerslam later that year and WrestleMania the following year. This became one of the best if not the best Tag team feud in the history of the WWE as they topped themselves every time they went out their and earned everyone's respect because of it. At the point that the I-Quit match at Royal Rumble 99 happened it was something almost unheard for the WWE as they never really held I-Quit matches before. Rock & Mankind would set the bar incredibly high having one of the best matches from the Attitude Era in general. The match that helped make Shawn Michaels a star aka the first of only two 60 minute Iron Matches that WWE has had on PPV and Michaels has had a part in both of them. There is no doubt what this match did in terms of giving Michaels that last step to reach the top of the card. The Ironman match set the bar for the future and also became one of the best matches of that era much like both of the two previous matches mentioned.
Before I finish this post I feel obligated to mention some of the things that have happened at this arena. The Pond actually played host to Tina Turner's Last Concert on December 6th 2000. The arena also opened on June 19th 1993 with Barry Manilow as its first concert. These are just special occurrences that happened at The Pond before the name change in the of 2006 anything after the fact wont be mentioned in this post. I hope this look back give you a different perspective on another Arena from the Past!!!
I love looking back wrestling's past. I view my job as bring new life to the part of wrestling some people thought was gone.
