We are half way through the Year end award for 2015 as we have now reached our fourth award. This award is given to the company that has done the most to improve with the calendar and ends up in a better position then which they started. 2015 has been the biggest year for independent wrestling in recent memory with various companies landing National TV deals and other expanding onto other networks to gain more exposure.
This year has given the Independent circuit more exposure and more attention then it ever has had before, but let's not stop here & let's continue the growth and expansion in 2016 as Indy wrestling continues to get bigger and bigger. Below are the companies up for the award.
It seems to be never ending every time I think the updates will stop more come out, whoever is in charge of releasing information really knows how to keep people's attention. The expected launch for the company is still early next year. I will say from what I have read this company seems like it will be very unique from any other company around right now, but I'll let you be the judge of that:
- The TV series for the company will be called Revolution TV, with the product being promoted as "reality sports". All of the ring segments would be the reality aspect. The name of the show and the "reality sports" term were trademarked by Bill Townsend, President of CWR.
- The idea behind the promotion seems to have something to do with veterans like Shane Douglas & Animal training and managing new talents.
- Douglas has contact several wrestlers in recent months, asking if they were "ready to move to Vegas". The promotion is also looking for multiple announcers who can speak various languages.
- The promotion has been working on a launch since March 2014 when Shane first began contacting talent for them to sign letter of intent that they would be interested in working for CWR (Then known as Classic Wrestling Federation)
The biggest part of the CWR business plan is that they plan to offer talent things like health insurance benefits, or stipends, a 401k retirement plan and other benefits, and to create a profit sharing plan where all athletes share in the success of the company. It has also been said that the company plans to make a portion of the TV revenue open to retiring wrestlers as a pension plan of sorts. All these unique ideas have never been tried by a wrestling company and it will be interesting to see how the company does when they finally do launch. I guess it's fair to ask "Are You Ready for a Revolution?
Before around 15 minutes ago I had no idea that a company that has been around for the last decade would actually be holding their final event tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 till 6:00pm EST then the second of #2Sets will begin at 7:00pm EST. The event will be held in the 2CW arena in Syracuse, NY which is where it all began nearly 10 years ago and the perfect place for it all to end.
The name of this is #2Sets because the company will be holding two events in one day as I mentioned above with one starting at 3:30pm EST and the other starting at 7:00pm EST. Right now the only way to see this event is on 2CW.com which will be airing the event as an IPPV. The only reason why IPPV is the only way to see the event is because tickets are Sold Out to be in the stands at the 2CW arena. Also if you watch it on 2CW.com you could view the IPPV for free with just some ads in between or pay 3.99 and gain access to both events without ads.
These events will include current 2CW World Champion Sami Callihan, AJ Styles, Kenny Omega, Eddie Edwards, 2 Cold Scorpio, AR Fox, Dalton Castle, Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, Sean Carr, and 2CW Tag Team Champions also making their last independent wrestling appearance ever....... Young Bucks. Seeing independent companies go under like this is tough, because I never like seeing companies go under, but it should give even more reason to people to pay attention to the local companies. Some great companies are right under your nose you just have to find them, because you maybe losing out on some seeing great unknown talent that you wouldn't see anywhere else.
At this time last year we were preparing for the first glimpse of NJPW for people in the states and our first glimpse came in the form of Wrestle Kingdom which is NJPW's biggest PPV of the year. Now a year later we look forward to the big even once more, but the only difference between this year and last is that the even will unfortunately not be featured on PPV in the states. Even after the solid success the show had last year, NJPW wasn't able to get back with Jeff Jarrett or ROH to partner with a US PPV company again like last year.
Also though in many ways that is news within itself I can also say that the company will have English announcers on the show once again, but the team wont include Jim Ross. This year the team will include ROH lead announcer Kevin Kelly, Lucha Underground announcer Matt Striker, and a third party with knowledge Japanese wrestling will serve as the announce team for the event.
The show once again will take place on January 4th and if you live in the states and would like to watch the event then you can. As Wrestle Kingdom 10 will be airing on NJPW World this year so even though it will not be on PPV in the states, there is still a way to watch the event.
With their biggest event of the year now in the rear view mirror DJ Hyde and CZW now look forward to 2016. At this point CZW will not be holding any live events in January as management will use the time to figure out his plans and creative strategy for the promotion. Hyde is looking for new talents and thinks that the time after the biggest show of the year is the right time for a break. Due to several wrestlers have left which resulted in changes in long term plans.
Currently there are rumors that CZW will likely expand Dojo Wars in 2016. They have been happy with the success of the smaller event and want to go to a larger venue, away from the CZW Academy in Blackwood, NJ. Right now certain talent seem to be on the radar of owner DJ Hyde like Lio Rush who has received a tremendous number of positive reviews recently and their has been talk that Anthony Nese may come into the company next year.
This is unlike anything thing a company has ever done in the wrestling world, I really honestly agree with this logic and think more companies should adopt this process. Having a long term direction for the company and knowledge of were your going makes a noticeable difference in the product just look at the company in Connecticut as perfect example. Planning ahead and knowing where going especially with talent allows talent to keep momentum and get over more, because they feel like they have a purpose in the eyes of the fans rather then just feeling like any other roster member.
At first I started out by picking only matches that actually happened during a particular week, but then I thought why should I limit myself and I expanded the series to be more of just a flashback match of week type series instead. The circle isn't complete yet we have hit almost the different parts of the wrestling business, but not an independent company. With one Indy company having their biggest show of the year this weekend I thought it was only far to include them in the post, and I also felt like including another company.
I know at this point I may sound like a broken record, but in some cases the best kept secret is only around the corner. If you don't like what you see on TV or even if you do and just want more there is likely an Independent company in your area, they can be your alternative or even your little something extra.
Every wrestling company has their major event for the year were everything leads and the show that everyone wants to make it on. The WWE has WrestleMania, ROH has Final Battle, TNA has Bound For Glory, and New Japan has Wrestle Kingdom. For CZW the big event is Cage of Death which has been their big event since 1999. Now to giving a glimpse into what will be a stacked card for a deserving company:
Cage of Death 17
Greg Excellent vs Anthony Nese
The Amazing Gulaks vs Beaver Boys
Death Match Rules:
Danny Havoc vs Ricky Shane Page
"Chainsaw" Joe Gacy vs Tim Donst
CZW Wired Championship Match:
(c) "Bad Boy" Joey Janela vs Lio Rush
CZW Tag Team Championship Match:
(c) Team Tremendous vs #TVReady
CZW World Champion: Cage of Death Match
(c) Matt Tremont vs ACH vs Masada vs Devon Moore
I feel as though with the new year right around the corner that speaking of one of the first events of the new year which is set to happen down in Florida from January 22-24. After over a half decade in existence Evolve has decided to hold a tournament to crown the companies first ever Tag Team Champions. I do believe it was around a year or so ago that the company actually crowned their first World Champion and now they will be adding Tag Titles to go along with the World Title.
The success and longevity that Evolve has achieved in their time as a company without titles is extremely unique and makes some question if titles are really necessary for the long term success of a company. For the longest time Evolve never had a World Champion and that meant Wins and Loss meant a lot more due the talent having nothing else to fight for. This tournament begins on Friday January 22 and ends Sunday January 24 which is the same day as the Royal Rumble, but it is very likely that Evolve will hold the show on Sunday thus to allow people to attend both their show and the Rumble later in the night. Below are a list of teams entered in the Tournament:
It was only a few weeks ago when I did another post with this same title and spoke about some relative unknowns from the Indy circuit as a way to give them the spotlight and I shift gears and give the spotlight to the companies. I have chosen two of the companies that are running show this weekend to give some "spotlight" time to.
On their upcoming show this weekend AAA will be crowing a new AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion at the December 4 show. The title had to be vacated when Alberto Del Rio returned to WWE and never came back to drop the title. They have opted to actually not run a tournament, and have instead chosen to just run with Johnny Mundo vs Rey Mysterio at the Guerra De Titanes events on December 4 at Feria de Tampico in Tampico for the vacant title.
