A move that was two or three years to late at the time that it finally happened, by the spring of 2000 talents like Benoit, Malenko, Guerro, and others had walked away from the company and now the once deep roster is gasping for air. On April 10, 2000 we saw the long overdue "re-launch" of a company looking for a break as Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo gained control of the company and lead the creative side of the company. Though the on air product didn't totally change until the day mentioned above the mentality of the company had changed a ways back when Russo took the reigns back in September 1999.
When Russo gained control the first time he realized the WCW needed fresh stars and that's what he tried to make well excluding the time he spent reforming the NWO for the fifty-seventh time. Vince was removed from as the head of creative in January of 2000 only 4 month after being given the book in the first place. Then four months after he got sent home he was brought back with Eric Bischoff to replace Kevin Sullivan who had only had the book for a little over four months at the time he was replaced.
Taking the normal period of time someone had the book during this time and looking at the first months of the Bischoff/Russo regime it saw so many talents try to be pushed and in reality saw more failed pushes then talent actually achieving success. Spotlighting the mistakes made with Billy Kidman, "That 70's Guy" Mike Awesome, and Vampiro. I tossed Vampiro in as a failed push, because did anyone gain from that stupid Human torch except critics who got another reason to hate the company.
I'm not bad mouthing the company for taking a chance on those talents I would actually praise the company for doing that I am more or less saying the only phrase that would describe this situation is too little to late. I will say that if they would have started two years sooner they may have had a different outcome then the results they ended up with saw.
