Anytime we see a former talent return to the company they always get back with a large amount of momentum. Now don't get me wrong every so often the WWE strikes gold with a former talent returning to the company and gives us an opportunity to see some dream matches. But sometimes when a shocking return takes place they always return with momentum and every so often that momentum disappears.
Two years ago on the Monday Night Raw following Summerslam the Dudley Boys made their shocking return to the WWE for the first time in about nine years. Upon their return it was sight to see, but after a while it was clear that the momentum was wearing off. Even though they pretty much returned to help get the stars of today over I feel like they could've done more had they been booked better. See the underlying idea is that the WWE lacks depth and long term planning which makes it easier for talent end up lost in the shuffle so even when someone big returns they could easily get lost. For example, compare the Hardy Boys return to the Dudley Boys return and you'll see this concept at work. Unfortunately, when talent get lost in the shuffle it can be hard to bring them back to a position of meaning and importance, but not impossible. This is the reason that when a talent returns it is a balancing act to keep them in the conversation and to maximize the nature of the return. However, this doesn't always happen and the returning talent becomes a sudden flop rather than an important asset.

Though most of you who are fans of both WWE and the Independents may be thinking that Colt was never in the WWE, and technically you'd be right. See Colt Cabana was in the WWE for a short run during the original brand split as a jobber but he was under the name of Scotty Goldman. In my opinion Colt has done wonders since his WWE run to become a staple of the Indies and in some cases a legend on the independents.
However, I always thought that with how good Colt is in the ring and how natural his comedy act looks he would be perfect for the WWE. Though some may think that Colt is very limited and can only work as a good guy and not a bad guy well in recent years I have seen Colt more often as a heel than a baby face. Which the fact that he can do both would really help the WWE in adding more depth to company, because everyone knows how they like to turn people back and forth. Even though at this point the WWE has done a little better hiding the lack of depth with the brand split the roster is still clearly lacking and needs help. As for which brand Colt belongs on and would do better on well that's simple in my book. I think that Colt would be a better fit on Smackdown this way he could work with New Day and Fashion Police. Though I am almost 100% sure that Colt will not be signed by WWE I do think bringing him in would help the company, Money in the Bank 2017
Pre-Show The Hype Bros vs The Colons WWE Women's Championship Match: (c) Naomi vs Lana I for one am happier with the idea of Lana competing for the Women's title then her being in Money in the Bank. Even though either way she doesn't deserve the opportunity she is in fact a good filler for the one show with all the other women competing in the ladder match. This will also be a good test for Lana to see if she can be trusted in the ring. I do think that either way Naomi will get the win tonight. WWE Tag Team Championship Match: (c) The Usos vs The New Day Since switching heel the momentum for The Uso's has never been higher then it is right now and the team should keep building. The New Day have done an amazing job as a trio during their entire run I just think that it might be too soon to give them the tag team titles on Smackdown. With that being said The Usos will get the win. First Ever Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match: Carmella vs Tamina vs Natalya vs Becky Lynch vs Charlotte For the first time ever the women of WWE will get the opportunity to enter into the Money in the Bank ladder match. I don't really have much to say about this match because I don't really know what to expect from this one. What I will say is that I think that Carmella will become the first ever Ms. Money in the Bank. WWE Championship Match: (c) Jinder Mahal w/ The Singh Brothers vs Randy Orton I honestly am still getting used to the idea that Jinder is the WWE Champion as it is extremely incredible. At this point in his career Randy is capable of taking a loss and allowing the WWE to give Jinder a stable run with the World Title instead of short joke run. With that being said I believe Jinder will remain WWE Champion. Money in the Bank Ladder Match: AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura vs Baron Corbin vs Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens vs Dolph Ziggler Honestly, the first point I have to make is that I don't understand why Dolph was chosen to be apart of the match as he has absolutely no momentum going into the match. However, I don't really think that the WWE had anyone else to place in the match instead of Dolph Ziggler. This is the first time that I would've liked to see Dolph get sent to Raw instead of Miz as having Miz be a part of the build for the show would've helped the match and show tremendously. But without the "A-Lister" the match still will be very exciting and it is a very hard choice to pick the winner. For the last year the WWE has been helping Baron Corbin work his way up on the card, this is a perfect way to get his push back on track. This is the reason why I am selecting Baron Corbin to grab the briefcase and win Money in the Bank. At this point it feels like there is a story that is never ending as one woman who lead the early days of WWE's changed booking philosophy for the women's division. Things started to changed in NXT first with the booking of both Paige and Emma. It feels like we should start questioning if we will ever see Paige in a WWE ring again, but it seems like they are giving her another chance and really aren't holding the actions of another against her.
Paige was once the leader of the women's division and really still has a tremendous potential to help the division. The issues we have seen from behind the camera but it seems like she will be recovering from her most surgery to hopefully return from her injuries. I would like to say that she is just healing from old injuries, but it isn't just that simple. Though it seems like things have calmed down in the last few months it would be hard to believe that some sort of tension wouldn't exist between Paige and the company. Fact is problems may exist, but I do hope that a Paige return is in the cards for the WWE as seeing her back would be a big boost to a division that has gone through some hard times. As of this writing it seems as though Paige might be training for her return to the ring as she is recovering from neck surgery. From the last report I saw it seems as though if everything goes according to plan and that's a big if we could be seeing Paige before the year is up. Going back to last year starting with the Cruiserweight Classic it was the first time we actually saw the WWE use the WWE Network to spotlight talent outside the company. Since then we have heard about the possibility of the WWE running the same type of tournament for the Women's Division. Then with the success of the CWC last year it became all the more clear that the WWE would attempt to do the same idea for the women.
Recently, the WWE actually made the announcement about the tournament and named it after Mae Young. Once the name came out a lot of talent gave heavy praise of the name as most agree that Mae is someone that deserves to be honored. Now everyone knows that the CWC last year was held to determine the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion. At this point there is no way to know what the winner of the tournament may receive. The scheduled date for the tournament is currently set for July 13 and 14 at Full Sail University. The tournament is being taped for a new WWE Network series, which will be released in sets as VOD programing similar to how Holy Foley! and Camp WWE were released. At this point the finals seem to be set for August 29 as a live WWE Network special. Back in the Summer of 2005 the WWE made the decision to go into the annals of their tape library. The WWE opened the door for an ECW reunion show lead by Paul Heyman and Tommy Dreamer and the show felt very authentic sort of like an original ECW event. A former home base for of the company in the Hammerstein Ballroom and that played host to both events. One Night Stand the first time around was amazing with a large number of former ECW talent featured on the show including a Main Event lead by the Dudley Boys facing Dreamer & Sandman.
One year later everything changed as the WWE decided against having Dreamer and Heyman have complete control over the event and they took more control. This likely had to do with the fact that soon after the event the ECW brand was introduced as a third brand on television. But with names like Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, and Big Show featured on the show it didn't have the same nostalgia as the first One Night Stand. Due to the fact that a number of stars worked on the show that never worked in ECW and that affected the event, because it didn't feel small and it felt more like a WWE PPV than the type of PPV that the first one felt like. The nostalgia, intimacy, and small budget feel were all missing from this event which hurt the event as those characteristics is what made the first One Night Stand so special. For the first time it is has worked out that two legends share the same birthday. Over the years many legends in the WWE have been celebrated in various ways and to various degrees. In some cases legends have left behind the WWE due to the actions of WWE management, but like JR used to say "Anything can happen in the WWE." This way of thought has never been reflected better then with the career of Billy Graham. "Superstar" Graham at one point was the biggest star in the New York area and became the first heel WWF Champion in the history of the company. Also names like Hulk Hogan, Jesse Ventura, and various others have named Graham as an inspiration and a big reason for them breaking into the wrestling business. Following a disagreement with Vince Sr. Billy would leave the territory and in a way would never truly be the same as he once was. Following suit with many of his fellow legends the "Superstar" reconciled with the company a few years back and is on great terms. Another legend that has had a bumpy road with the WWE over the years especially in recent years is Mick Foley. Mick had in the past been a huge advocate of the GiveDivasaChanceMovement and was very critical of WWE creative in the past to the point where he actually destroyed his TV due to a WWE booking decision. However, in recent Mick has really calmed down on his negative view of the company and honestly it has been better for us all, because that has lead to a Mick Foley return to the company and I think that much like Graham, Mick has never been on better terms with WWE.
WWE Extreme Rules
Pre-Show: I presume we could see the Golden Truth collide in the match before the PPV as no match has been announced as of yet for this part of the event. But the match has yet to be announced as of right now. Sasha Banks & Rich Swann vs Alicia Fox & Noam Dar Frankly the only reason that this feud hasn't been good is because for the last few year Foxy has been booked to be nothing more then a jobber, which has devalued her tremendously. Had she been booked better recently even before her feud with Sasha I don't think people would detest this feud as much as they do. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me who wins this match, but logically the only choice to win is Sasha and Swann, because I really to hope that the WWE can quit making us suffer with this feud and move on. WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match: (c) Neville vs Austin Aries This feud had a great start, but after such a long time it has become very weak and is starting to hurt those who are involved. Neville has been a fantastic Champion, but I feel like his reign has been losing steam in recent weeks. This feud needs to end soon before it destroys the momentum of everyone involved. This makes me think of Smackdown last year when they developed the habit of extending feuds a little too long. My pick is the King keeps his crown. WWE Tag Team Title match: (c) Hardy Boys vs Cesaro & Sheamus At this point the shock is still very present from when the Hardy's returned back at Wrestlemania, but it is slowly wearing off and the booking needs to back up the idea that they aren't perfect. Going into this show we have seen the Hardy's win every match they had and that warrants the idea that they will come up short. I think that the Hardy's could keep the titles, but it's more likely Cesaro and Sheamus will get the win tonight. WWE Intercontinental Championship: (c) Dean Ambrose vs The Miz w/ Maryse Now there is no doubt that Miz and Ambrose have great chemistry with one another. But at this point it is just a rehashing of the old feud that happened last year on Smackdown. It's very telling that most of the feuds that are going on for championships should be ending soon before they become overdone and boring. This is one of those feuds and I believe that Miz winning is the best way to go. WWE Women's Championship: (c) Alexa Bliss vs Bayley Since the start of this division the title has changed hands a good number of times and even though it'd made some sense while Sasha and Charlotte were wrapped up in their feud it doesn't make any sense now. There first meeting should've ended with Bayley getting the win or in a dusty finish rather than Alexa getting the victory. The only reason why I am mentioning this is because I believe that Bayley will likely get her title back tonight. Roman Reigns vs Finn Balor vs Samoa Joe vs Seth Rollins vs Bray Wyatt Honestly, this build has been terrible for this "first time ever" as it's just been a switching up the five guys in different variations of matches which is no way to build a match. But I will say that either way this match should be really good as they are five of the best talents in the company. Keeping this in mind I don't think that any of these five guys will have a long term feud with Brock at this point, but all of them would have a great match with Lesnar if given the chance. This is a tough choice for who I think wins, but I would probably have to go with Seth Rollins getting the win tonight and moving onto face Brock next month. Dear WWE,
I recently wrote a letter to TNA, prior to their re-launch and now I am doing the same thing for the other top company in the world of wrestling. Since WrestleMania it feels like your momentum has gone away a lot faster then normal and at this point it feels like it's gone or almost gone at least for Raw. At this point, especially following Backlash Smackdown has good amount of momentum and interest from the fans following the title victory of Jinder Mahal. However, Raw is the total opposite at this point with both interest and momentum at an all time low for the brand. In hindsight I really thought that Raw is suppose to be the "top brand" in the WWE. But that's not the case anymore because if anything both brands are on equal footing at this point with Smackdown growing leaps and bounds in recent months. For the last few years I have been pleading with you to develop a unique identity for each brand including a different sound for each show. Now back in the day there wasn't a different sound for the brands because the announcers of the time weren't as overexposed. With the amount of content your company has and their is a lot of content, but it comes at a price as you are overexposing your announcers. I know this doesn't really mean anything to a lot of other people, but it does matter to me the point I am trying to make is that hearing the same voice all the time could in fact kill your interest right from the start if you are tired of hearing the same people. Even if it's the same lead announcer is always present you have enough announcers employed to have a different voice and mix things up for the TV programs and PPV's. For example, last summer during the CWC we saw Daniel Bryan in the booth with the normal lead announcer for television and it help give the tournament a very different sound and made it seem all the more unique. Giving a distinct sound to TV shows has always been a major compliant I have about your company and I am tired of just keeping quite so this is just the start of things and look out for part 2 of the letter. |
