This Day in Wrestling History: 10/28/19

10/28/2019

As always wrestling gives us both great memories and memories we try and forget, but with the amount of moments worth remembering that have happened we are bound to forget some. The same could be said about some talent that were very much underrated during their career or never at the top of a company during a run this unfortunately makes it easier for fans to forget certain talent. These two are very different talent and had two very different careers while they worked in this great business. Sometimes we encounter those that deserve to be remembered and acknowledged. I would like to wish a very big Happy Birthday to all who are celebrating their special day today and especially to the one featured below.

Nerd Note: After making Tough Enough brand exclusive the year before Raw needed something special like Tough Enough. Enter the Divas Search as WWE was in search for new women to add into the Women's Division. Christy Hemme would win the Divas Search and even though she didn't have a long career in the ring she was a good manager and spent time as the ring announcer for TNA Wrestling.

Happy Birthday to Christy Hemme who turns 39 years old
Happy Birthday to Dan Maff who turns 43 years  old

Nerd Note: As a way to avoid having to go to every town back in the day the owner would give talent the opportunity to book shows in smaller towns to learn the ropes. During his time in Florida Dick Slater would co-book with Kevin Sullivan and would later book in San Antonio and the Carolina's.

Happy Birthday to Simon Gotch who turns 37 years old

Vince McMahon: The Man Who Made Wrestling; The Man Who Made Me Hate Wrestling

10/16/2019

Vince McMahon had everything to gain. Inheriting his fathers company was the start of a long lasting career. You can say Vince was fed a silver spoon, but you cannot deny the way he transformed the business into just that: a million dollar industry. He had an incredible roster to work with, wrestlers from NWA who already had a following. What really defines Vince as a visionary is the attitude era. The mid to late 90s in wrestling was such a crucial time. Wrestling was being used by the teenagers of America as a way to rebel against the system. Wrestling was our rock and roll. It was a form of expression and art. It was a subculture, the antithesis to the mainstream culture being shoved down our throats.

Now, Vince doesn't deserve all the credit. He would be nowhere without pioneers and mic masters like the Undertaker, Mankind, and Stone Cold. These wrestlers weren't known for being the best technical wrestlers but their ability to connect with the audience to build a story and fan base was incredible. Something Vince couldn't compete with, so he ran with it. Vince didn't want to make himself look bad in the story line, unless it ultimately made him more money and earned more grandeur reviews. So he let Stone cold make him the evil corporate heel. It was genius, but Vince also thought he could make this last forever. He started losing an audience after the attitude era faded out, and after he made wrestling more of a pg sport entertainment entity, and less of a rock and roll entertainment spectacle. Wrestling isn't relatable anymore.

The definition of masculinity has shifted in society. Vince is over doing it with the muscle heads. He needs to have wrestlers who are good actors on the mic who can win over fans, and can create real controversies. Stop casting Brock Lesnar wannabes. Bring back the Mankinds and the X-Pac's. And Vince needs to let the wrestlers be themselves. Blocking the wrestlers from showing personality hinders the wrestlers visions from becoming realities. Don't say you can't repeat trends in a similar way, because that's all the music business ever does. And they make billions.

Nerd Note: Following their show stealing match at AAA When World's Collide against El Hijo Del Santo and Octagon; both Eddie Guerrero and Art Barr had interest from ECW. I haven't seen many matches from AAA, but this match is one of the greatest matches I have ever seen in twenty years of watching wrestling. Unfortunately, within three weeks of tearing down the house in Los Angeles Art Barr would pass away suddenly. For the rest of his career Eddie Guerrero would then use the frog splash as his finishing move as a tribute to his fallen partner.
Happy Birthday to Art Barr who would've turned 53 years old
Happy Birthday to The Miz who turns 39 years old

Expectations for October and Wrestling

10/3/2019

For the first time this year I have tapped into my followers to see what they can expect from the biggest in modern wrestling history. In my opinion, with the introduction of All Elite Wrestling Dynamite, the move for Smackdown from USA Network to Fox, Impact goes to AXS TV, and Studio wrestling returns to Atlanta with the NWA. A lot is going on this month in world of pro-wrestling and we will talk about it all, but first we let's find out what will keep these followers watching and what their expectations are for the future:

KFab Wrestling Chronicles: Well I like the fox deal that they have for smackdown and I like the fact that fox wants more of a sports presentation/feel to it. I would say the 1st step to improving would be to stop relying on the old guard and legends to help boost ratings. It prevents/hinders current talent for maximizing their potential and gaining more tv/mic time. I have never had interest in seeing 50+yr olds still wrestle. If u wanna have a royal rumble spot here & there like ddp or hacksaw fine but I can't get into taker, goldberg, kane etc anymore, they gotta go, they've been around too long and it's becoming a bit selfish. Vince or Whoever's in his ear needs to stop thinking about making a quick buck now and start thinking long term like they use to back in the day

2ndRowWrestling: For me, I’ve been watching straight since 1985. I made it through the early 90s and if anyone can get through that cartoonish era and keep watching- you’ll watch whatever they throw at you. It helps when the wrestling and storylines are actually watchable and coherent. But I’m a fan for life. I will def have Miller get back to you. Thanks for asking! -Joost

TTR Wrestling: As you say, big things are coming this October and it's a much-needed boost for the sport as pro-wrestling in general over this past decade has fallen even further from the high pedestal that it was once sat upon, mainly due to a bad reputation getting even more tainted due to more and more silly indie gimmicks, leaving current fans of wrestling giving up on it, not to mention the very few new fans it draws in. Pro Wrestling is said to be in a huge growth period as of late, at least to us fans it is, But to the outside world, It's just another flash in the pan of the "fake" stuff coming back to the limelight, as pro-wrestling as a whole in this "woke" era, where everyone knows it's inner workings, has a very niche audience at best, despite best intentions from companies and promotions. While to fans of wrestling, AEW is showing signs that the wrestling business is in a growth period, but in reality, It isn't, As many non-fans will think, why bother with the fake stuff when they can go and watch some real fights and matches. They don't realise all the hard work and skill that goes into making a pro-wrestling match and a PW event, so all they see is scripted fighting, whereas fans will see something completely different. So with this logic, This will always be wrestling's greatest flaw that prevents mass numbers of new fans tuning in. Say, in a group of ten people who are new to wrestling, only a small number of that ten are going to stick with it based on what I described. Then, take away those people who won't like the things like the comedy stuff that Nakazawa and Orange Cassidy are doing, That already small number that may stick with wrestling will be reduced even more, leaving just a mere few of the ten people remaining, If they're lucky that is, Leaving AEW as just another wrestling show for existing fans, not a company drawing in new viewers. what would they have to do make you and keep you watching? I can't stand the goofy, comedy wrestling that litters the sport in this current day and age. It really puts me off getting into and devoting my time into a new show or company as a lot of Indie shows will book the likes of Chuck Taylor, Joey Ryan, Nakazawa, and Orange Cassidy. And now with AEW, a MAJOR company with a MAJOR TV deal signing these clowns, It really puts a downer on what should be a GREAT TIME in the timeline of the pro wrestling environment. If I'm to keep watching AEW, Get rid of these jokers and get some real wrestlers signed, and cut with the number of silly gimmicks.
