This Day in Wrestling History: Hardcore Heaven 1995

7/1/2019

As wrestling began to recover it was ECW that would bring a hardcore revolution to America allowing the young company to stick out among the other two big promotions. A number of the names on this show I both didn't know worked for ECW or have never heard of before. Either way though the one reason that this match caught my attention was the Taipei Deathmatch that took place between Ian & Axl Rotten. To set the stage the former tag team named Bad Breed (Ian & Axl Rotten) had been together in the ECW tag team division for two years finding very limited success.

In late 1994 they would enter into a feud with The Pitbulls and would lose to the Pitbulls in a match where the losing had to break up. This would give birth to one of the greatest and most violent feuds in ECW history as the Rotten's would feud with one another for the entire summer. The feud would blow off at this event in the first ever Taipei Deathmatch. For those who may not know or remember what this match was well let me explain both competitors tape their fists and then proceed to dip their firsts in glue and then roll them in broken glass, this basically means that both guys had broken glass glued to their fists. I remember that this match was one of my earliest memories of seeing ECW and I was fascinated by how different it was compared to the WWE and even after all these years this match still sticks out as one of the most violent I have seen.
