This Day in Wrestling History: 5/12/205/12/2020 As always wrestling gives us both great memories and memories we try and forget, but with the amount of moments worth remembering that have happened we are bound to forget some. The same could be said about some talent that were very much underrated during their career or never at the top of a company during a run this unfortunately makes it easier for fans to forget certain talent. These two are very different talent and had two very different careers while they worked in this great business. Sometimes we encounter those that deserve to be remembered and acknowledged. I would like to wish a very big Happy Birthday to all who are celebrating their special day today and especially to the one featured below. Nerd Note: Penny Banner was married to Jim Crockett Promotions Legend and former announcer Johnny Weaver.

Nerd Note: In 1982, Bill Watts took over the Oklahoma territory from Leroy McGuirk after purchasing Tri-State Wrestling from Leroy in 1979. I also found out yesterday that retired NJPW legend Hiroshi Hase is the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Nerd Note: Randy Colley aka Moondog Rex had a long career prior to joining the Moondog tag team debuting in 1971 under the name Jack Dalton and switch to his real name for the first time in 1976 after joining Jim Crockett Promotions. Randy also was initially pegged to be under the face paint as Demolition Smash, but it was a case of Randy had been working under his real name the year before so it was easy to spot someone familiar and Barry Darsow took his spot.

Exposition is Important in Wrestling4/30/2020 Back in the territory era and prior wrestling was simple and the feuds were clear cut for the most part. As a fan you knew who was the good guy and who was the bad guy and why they had an issue. Even if you didn't at first the television announcer would catch the fans up or the promos the talent did would help fill in the blanks. It didn't matter if it was something simple like good vs evil or something a little more complex like Jimmy Hart turning on Lawler in a promo after Lawler broke his leg. Either way the fans were never left wondering why exactly two wrestlers had been paired together.
Nowadays we are lucky to get even a highlight package on a weekly program. More often then not weekly programming is changed week to week and it often leaves us wondering why two random wrestlers were put together other than just, because. It is rare to be given much context if any at all, and the fact that there is very little exposition to feuds that doesn't help the talent get more interest from the fans. Meaningless feuds only gives talent television time, but with little character development it doesn't help them move forward or put them in a different of a position then they were in to begin with. In my opinion, it seems like most writers have forgotten that wrestling can be simple if you tell a good story with psychology, but it isn't about psychology or the story anymore it's more about the match and less about the reason for the match. It is an important part of the wrestling puzzle that has fallen by the waste side.

Nerd Note: It is rare that a family can stay together in wrestling, but for the most part where Amazing Red went his cousins Los Maximo's were with him at one time or another. Red has spent some time in every major independent company in the US.

Austin has spent time with ROH, WWE, TNA, Impact Wrestling, and NXT in the past.

Nerd Note: Zandig opened Combat Zone Wrestling in 2001 after operating as a training school for the two prior years. Zandig would then sell the promotion to DJ Hyde in 2009 and DJ still owns CZW to this day.

On January 31, 1999 the founder of All Japan Pro-Wrestling Giant Baba passed away and then on May 13, 2000 All Japan Pro-Wrestling Icon Jumbo Tsuruta passed away sticking another nail in the recovery of AJPW after the departure of Mitsharu Misawa the year before.

Nerd Note: Mike Bell is the local talent that fought Perry Saturn on an episode of Jakked and was tossed out of the ring brutally landing on his neck and getting severely injured. Saturn became frustrated with Bell for messing up various moves during the match and would take out his frustrations on Bell. Mike would remain in WWE developmental for a time as a solid prospect, but someone who had just a bad night. Check it out!!
